Lord of the Ring Quotes
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return Of The King

"Out of the wreck rose the Black Captain, tall and threatening, towering above her. With a cry of hatred that stung the very ears like venom he let fall his malice. Her shield was shivered in many pieces, and her arm was broken; she stumbled to her knees. He bent over her like a cloud, and his eyes glittered; he raised his mace to kill..."

- J.R.R. Tolkien, Silmarillion

"The Black Rider flung back his hook, and behold! he had a kingly crown; and yet upon no head visible was it set. The red fires shone between it and the mantle shoulders vast and dark. From a mouth unseen, there came a deadly laughter."

- J.R.R. Tolkien, Silmarillion

"...Upon it sat a shape, black-mantled, huge and threatening. A crown of steel he wore, but between rim and robe naught was there to see, save
only a deadly gleam of eyes: the Lord of the Nazgul.
To the air he had returned, summoning his steed ere the darkness failed, and now he was come again, bringing ruin, turning hope to despair,
and victory to to death..."

- J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return Of The King

"Those who used the Nine Rings became mighty in their day, kings, sorcerors, and warriors of old..."

The Towers of Gondor

Gondor was founded by Isildur and Anarion. Isildur's base was at Minas Ithil, and Anarion's at Minas Anor, with the Capital of Gondor between them at Osgiliath. Minas Ithil was built to keep a watch on the border of Mordor, and Minas Anor to protect Gondor from the wild Men of The Mountains. Minas Anor was named The Tower of The (Settting) Sun as it was West of Osgiliath, whereas The Tower of The (Rising) Moon at Minas Ithil was to the East of the Capital.

When Sauron captured Minas Ithil the Capital of Gondor removed to the town at Minas Anor. Minas Anor's name was changed to Minas Tirith (The Tower of Guard).

'Minas Tirith' is generally applied to the town and citadel and interchangeable with 'Gondor' when referring to the city. Minas Tirith is a heavily fortified walled city of 7 levels built on the south-eastern slopes of Mount Mindolluin. The Tower is at the top within the Citadel. The "Siege of Gondor" (Return of The King, Book V, Chap IV) is also the Siege of Minas Tirith. The Tower became also known as The White Tower, symbolising its status opposing the Black Tower of Sauron.

Minas Ithil - the tower guarding Ithilien and the border with Mordor - was renamed Minas Morgul (The Tower of Black Magic) after its capture by Sauron. Minas Morgul is the castle of The Nazgul.

"The Two Towers"

Exactly which Towers JRR Tolkien meant, when he was obliged by his publishers to divide LoTR into three volumes and decided on "The Two Towers" for the second, is unclear. Tolkien's own illustration suggests the reference is to Orthanc and Minas Morgul.
